Who may benefit from our program? We have designed our program and have continued training programs for our staff, to provide services to First Nations and Inuit youths, boys and girls, in between the ages of 12 to 17 years old. Younger youths can be considered depending on certain criterias. For adult cases, they would be referred to an adult solvent abuse program in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The youths being referred to our Center have already recognized their need to come into our program and have accepted to participate. We will verify their readiness to initiate the rehabilitation program through pre-treatment visits into the community or by phone talking directly to the youth and familly.

We have categorized the types of solvent abuse into three groups: one being the experimental type, the other is social users, and the third one being at the chronic stage of solvent abuse. The youths targeted by our program are situated at the level of being social abusers. Youths abusing solvents, and other substances whenever the occasions arise, with their peers, during weekends, when bored and looking for some excitement, or trying to alleviate certain problems in their life, to name a few examples.

In the cases of chronic abusers, youths inhaling solvents and other substances on a regular daily basis, with or without an occasion, regardless if they are with peers or on their own, these cases will be closely evaluated. Chronic abusers could be referred to the Solvent Abuse Treatment Center in Thunder Bay. Once having completed their detoxification period, they could be returned to our Center for the completion of the rehabilitation process.
