It should be noted that a youth who is requesting treatment must be properly assessed firsthand in order to determine whether a treatment option is the only option available in regards to the youth's present needs.
Firstly, treatment is not for everyone and before opting for a residential program you should look into services provided in the community. A community-based plan could be adopted and treatment should be looked at only when the community resources have been exhausted and/or the youth is at risk.
Secondly, when assessing the youth it should entail the assessment, treatment options and evaluation of the individual on an interpersonal and social level. Obtaining case history and background information on social, substance and family history can be part of the assessment.
Thirdly, if you are going with a treatment program then you will be asked to participate in not only the pre-admission but also the treatment and post treatment phase, collaborate with the Walgwan Centre and with other services in offering the most beneficial services to the youth promoting their well-being as well as providing service to the families and directing them to the proper resources to ensure a healthy balance when the youth returns to his/her community.
Pre-admission:
having the youth properly assessed
and priority needs identified
Treatment:
being involved in supporting the youth through his/her treatment plan by calling the youth on a weekly basis to offer support and take an interest in what they are doing;
establishing and creating a trusting relationship to favour a continuum of care;
being an active participant in monthly conference calls and working closely with the family;
sharing priority needs that the youth and family should address during the treatment program.
Post Treatment:
assist in the discharge planning and recommendations;
participate in the graduation ceremony;
participate in the aftercare component in offering a continuum of care.
