Walgwan Centre

Welcome to our Website

Mission

Provide each first nations and Inuit youth with a personally centered, holistic and culturally appropriate transition to her/his own path to well being and a healthy life.

By youth we mean any First Nation or Inuit youth, aged 12 to 17, who acknowledges an unhealthy dependence on solvents, and other substances and addictive activities. We also include her/his family and community with whom we work in a supportive partnership.

By transition we mean working in partnership to support the youth through the different recovery steps, including the pre centre ‘'preparation'' and the after care.

Culturally bases: The Centre brings in Elders to share knowledge of the different First Nations' traditions. This enables each youth to benefit from the appropriate cultural and traditional healing and teaching.

Profile

At the Walgwan Center, we welcome and assist Native and Inuit youth. If you have committed to a process of healing from addiction and attaining wellness, we offer you and your family the support you may need to reach that goal. We help restore a harmonious balance between your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs while assisting you in recapturing your sense of self-worth.

Our actions are guided by tradition. They respect your expectations and needs and the values of your family and community.

Location
The Walgwan Center is situated in the Province of Quebec on the Gaspe coast. Our priority is to offer services to all First Nations and Inuit communities situated East of Ottawa, therefore including the Labrador and Atlantic regions. However, being one of the National Centers, we may also admit youths from other provinces, if needed. Our location is the Mi'kmaq native community of Gesgapegiag. Gesgapegiag has an on-reserve population of about 500 members, situated at the mouth of the Grand Cascapedia River, on the shore of Chaleur Bay in Gaspesie. Gesgapegiag is situated near New Brunswick. Some of the services provided in the community are health and community services, Amerindian social services, an elementary school, an adult education learning center, the administrative services of the Band, a community hall, and the local Amerindian police. We can also find the Mawiomi Adult Treatment Center.
