Code of conduct

The Walgwan Center’s code of conduct have been defined in harmony with its core values: respect, compassion, love, sharing, truth, integrity, honesty, security, inclusion and team work.

I will participate in scheduled activities.

Others appreciate my presence.

I feel good and rested.

I am proud of myself

I will be praised for good behaviour.

When I waste time or waste the time of others, I will compensate for lost time by losing the privilege chosen by a caregiver for a given period of time:

  • Computer time
  • Social time
  • Activity

I will take care of myself:

  • by taking a shower
  • by washing my hands before meals and after using the bathroom
  • by brushing my teeth in the morning and in the evening

I will go to bed at the scheduled time:

  • I will close my door
  • I can read
  • I can write in my journal
  • I can colour
  • I will turn off lights and will remain calm at the scheduled time
I will express my needs calmly.

People will listen to me.

I will avoid having to repeat myself.

My success will be rewarded (bonus dollars).

I will be asked to repeat myself in a calm and polite manner.
I will respect established guidelines during outings.

I will retain my privilege of participating in activities.

I will have fun.

I will meet with a caregiver to discuss my participation in activities and to evaluate my participation in future activities.

I will consider my room as my personal space. 

My roommate and employees are the only persons authorized

I will benefit from a calm and intimate space.

I have a place to be alone.

I will be respected.

I will be advised if a non-authorized person is in my room.

My door will be locked for 24 hours.

Respect for others

I will use respectful language.

People will listen to me.

I will be praised for being polite.

I will make verbal or written excuses to the other person.

I will be asked to repeat myself in a calm and polite manner.

I will be punctual and avoid making others wait for me.

I will be praised for being punctual.

I will be able to participate in the activity.

My entourage will feel respected.

I will receive a warning.

Lost time or compensation for lost time.

I will follow directions given by caregivers.

My collaboration will be appreciated.

My behaviour will be praised

The caregiver will repeat the direction and state the consequence.

I will compensate for the caregiver’s time that I wasted.

I will avoid aggressive or sexual language or gestures.

My presence will be appreciated.

I will be proud of myself.

I can manage my anger.

Consequence depending on the type of gesture:

  • I will make verbal or written excuses.
  • I will participate in a reflective activity with a caregiver.
  • Exclusion from an activity.
  • Meeting with my programs and services educator/councillor

I will avoid inappropriate subjects:

  • Sexual connotation
  • Glorifying substance consumption
  • Violence

Respect for the environment

I will eat all meals at the table.

I will respect the « one at a time» at the counter rule.

No food or beverages on the couch.

I will be praised for my cleanliness.

I will benefit from a clean environment.

I will participate in all of the activities because I will have completed my tasks and I have been respectful.

I will receive a warning.

I will be the last person served at the next meal.

I will participate in keeping common areas clean:

  • Living room and dining room
  • Bathroom
  • Entrance/classroom
  • Spiritual room/turtle hut
I will clean up any mess I make or my room during the time when the activity is taking place.
I will keep my room clean.
I will have my sheets washed once per week. I will not participate in activities until I put my sheets in the wash.

I will avoid breaking/destroying material that does not belong to me:

  • Material belonging to the Center
  • Material belonging to others
  • Material in public spaces.
  1. I will pay for costs related to damages and I will meet with the programs and services councillor.
  2. I will make verbal or written excuses.
  3. If the behaviour is repeated, I will have additional tasks to completed to pay for damages.
